A rifle can have a quality optic, good ammunition, and a solid mount, yet still miss badly if the scope is not zeroed correctly. Take your time, keep the rifle supported the same way for every shot, and make adjustments based on group centers rather than single holes.

Before You Sight In a Scope

Confirm the firearm is unloaded before mounting, inspecting, or adjusting the optic. Keep the muzzle in a safe direction, use eye and ear protection, and follow the rules of the range. If you are unfamiliar with your rifle, scope mount, or adjustment system, consult the manufacturer instructions before loading ammunition.

A proper zero starts with a properly installed optic. Verify that the base, rings, and mounting screws are compatible with your rifle and tightened to the torque specifications provided by the manufacturer. Over-tightening rings can damage a scope tube, while loose hardware can make a zero shift between shots or after recoil.

Set the scope at a comfortable eye relief distance while shouldering the unloaded rifle in a normal shooting position. You should see a full, clear image without crawling the stock or stretching your neck. Level the reticle before final tightening. A canted reticle may not be obvious at close range, but it can create horizontal error as distance increases.

Start close and bore sight first

Start at 25 yards, especially with a new optic or a rifle that has been disassembled, transported hard, or fitted with a new mount. A close target makes it easier to get on paper and reduces ammunition wasted trying to locate an off-target impact at 100 yards.

If your rifle design allows it, remove the bolt and look through the bore from a secure rest. Center a target or distinct point through the bore, then adjust the scope until the reticle is centered on the same point. This is a basic bore-sighting method, not a final zero. Do not assume bore sighting means the rifle is ready for the field. It only gets the reticle close enough that your first live-fire group should land on the target.

Fire a controlled group

Load and fire a three-shot group from a stable supported position. Use the same point of aim for every shot and let the barrel settle if it becomes excessively hot. A single shot can be affected by shooter input, ammunition variation, or an unnoticed change in position. A three-shot group gives you a far better indication of where the rifle is actually printing.

After confirming the firearm is safe, inspect the target. Find the center of the group, then measure the distance between that center and your intended point of aim. If the group is two inches low and one inch right at 100 yards, the scope needs to move the point of impact two inches up and one inch left.

Remember the standard adjustment rule: move the reticle in the direction you want the bullet impact to move. If the group is low, dial elevation up. If it is right, dial windage left. Understand MOA and MRAD adjustments

Most rifle scopes use either minute of angle (MOA) or milliradian (MRAD, often called mil) adjustments. The turret marking determines how much each click moves the point of impact at a given distance.

A common MOA scope adjusts in 1/4 MOA clicks. At 100 yards, one MOA is approximately 1.047 inches, though most range work treats it as one inch for quick math. With 1/4 MOA clicks, moving an impact roughly two inches at 100 yards requires about eight clicks. At 50 yards, the same adjustment moves the impact about half as far.

Many MRAD scopes adjust in 0.1 mil clicks. One mil equals approximately 3.6 inches at 100 yards, so one 0.1 mil click moves impact about 0.36 inch at that distance. At 50 yards, it moves about 0.18 inch. The important point is not memorizing every number. Read your turret markings, measure your correction, and make adjustments that match your scope’s system.

Shoot again and refine

After adjusting, fire another three-shot group with the same hold and support. If the group center is still off, make a smaller correction and repeat. Avoid adjusting after every shot unless you are only trying to get on paper. Once your groups are close to the aiming point, use groups to refine the zero.

It also gives a clear baseline for later ballistic adjustments. Hunters may choose a 200-yard zero or another distance that suits their cartridge and expected field ranges, but that decision should be based on verified trajectory data, not assumptions.

A 25-yard zero can be useful as a starting point, but it is not automatically equivalent to a 100-yard or 200-yard zero. Bullet paths cross the line of sight at different points depending on height over bore, velocity, and ballistic profile. Confirm at the actual distance you intend to call your zero.

For a rimfire rifle, shotgun slug gun, or close-range carbine, a shorter zero may make more sense. Match the zero to the realistic job. A range rifle used mainly at 100 yards does not need the same setup as a hunting rifle intended for longer shots.

Confirm the Zero Beyond the Bench

Once the rifle is zeroed, fire a final confirmation group at your selected distance. If your scope has capped turrets, replace the caps after adjustment. If it has resettable dials, reset the turret reference marks to zero only after you have confirmed the actual zero. This makes future corrections easier to track.

Recheck zero after a hard case ride, a major temperature change, a scope or mount change, or any impact that could have affected the optic. It is also smart to verify zero when changing ammunition lots, especially with precision rifles or hunting loads where small shifts matter.

A properly zeroed scope gives you confidence only when the result has been verified. Build the habit of using stable support, consistent ammunition, measured corrections, and final groups. The extra rounds spent confirming zero are cheaper than guessing when the shot matters.
