A shotgun can cover a lot of ground, but shotgun ammunition is never one-size-fits-all. The correct shell depends on your firearm’s gauge and chamber, the job at hand, local rules, and how that specific shotgun performs with a given load. A box that looks right on the shelf is not a substitute for checking markings on the barrel and confirming reliable function at the range.

For serious owners, selection starts with compatibility. Performance comes next. Price matters, especially when buying range volume, but the least expensive shell is not always the right shell for hunting, defensive readiness, or a training day built around dependable cycling.

Start With Gauge and Chamber Length

Gauge is the first filter when buying shotgun ammunition. A 12 gauge shell belongs in a 12 gauge shotgun, a 20 gauge shell belongs in a 20 gauge shotgun, and so on. Do not assume shells are interchangeable because they appear similar. Keeping ammunition clearly separated is good practice, particularly when multiple gauges are stored in the same cabinet or range bag.

Chamber length is just as important. Common shotshell lengths include 2 3/4 inch, 3 inch, and 3 1/2 inch. Your shotgun barrel or receiver will be marked with the chamber length it accepts. A shotgun chambered for 3-inch shells can generally use 2 3/4-inch shells, but it should not be loaded with a longer shell than its marked chamber allows. Read the firearm manual if there is any doubt.

This is not a minor specification. When a shell is fired, its hull opens forward into the chamber area. Using an overlength shell can create an unsafe obstruction and excessive pressure risk. Confirm the gauge and chamber marking before every new purchase, especially when trying magnum loads or buying for a recently acquired shotgun.

Shotgun Ammunition Types and Their Uses

Shotshells are usually selected by payload type. The label may include shot size, payload weight, velocity, shell length, and whether the load is lead, steel, bismuth, tungsten, or another material. Those details tell you far more than a generic label such as “game” or “target.”

Birdshot for Clays and Small Game

Birdshot contains many small pellets. It is a standard choice for clay target shooting and is commonly used for suitable small-game and upland hunting applications. Popular target loads often use sizes such as No. 7 1/2, No. 8, or No. 9, though the right choice depends on the discipline, distance, and range rules.

For high-volume practice, look at consistency, recoil level, and your shotgun’s ability to cycle the load. Light target loads can be comfortable for extended sessions, but some semi-automatic shotguns may need a certain power level to run reliably. That is a firearm-and-load question, not something to guess at from packaging alone.

Buckshot for Defensive Applications

Buckshot uses larger pellets than birdshot and is commonly selected for defensive shotguns. Loads are available in several pellet sizes and configurations, including reduced-recoil options. The practical difference between two boxes can be significant: pellet count, buffering, wad design, velocity, and recoil all influence how the load handles and patterns.

There is no universal “best” buckshot load for every shotgun. Pattern your selected load safely on a proper range and record the results at realistic distances permitted by that range. Different barrels, choke configurations, and loads can produce noticeably different patterns. Reliable function, manageable recoil, and a predictable pattern matter more than a label claim.

Slugs for a Single-Projectile Option

Slug ammunition uses a single projectile rather than a group of pellets. It is often used for hunting where lawful and appropriate, as well as for certain sporting or duty applications. Smoothbore shotguns and rifled-barrel shotguns may favor different slug designs, so match the load to the firearm manufacturer’s recommendations.

Slugs require extra attention to backstop safety and range policy. Their range and energy characteristics differ from birdshot and buckshot, and many ranges have specific rules governing slug use. Check before you arrive rather than assuming a general shotgun lane allows every shotshell type.

Lead, Steel, and Other Shot Materials

Material selection is often driven by hunting regulations. Lead shot remains common for target shooting and certain hunting uses, while many waterfowl areas require non-toxic shot. Steel is widely available, and bismuth and tungsten-based loads provide additional options at different price points.

Do not treat non-toxic loads as a simple lead-for-lead swap. Pellet density, size selection, velocity, choke suitability, and firearm markings can all matter. Some older barrels may have restrictions on steel shot or tight choke combinations. Review the shotgun manufacturer’s guidance before using a new material type, and always follow state and local hunting regulations.

For range use, confirm what the facility permits. Some clubs limit shot size, projectile type, or shell construction to protect target systems and berms. Buying the right load before a trip saves time and keeps the day moving.

Recoil, Velocity, and Payload Trade-Offs

More is not automatically better. Heavier payloads and faster velocity can be appropriate for particular hunting conditions, but they typically bring more recoil. That can slow follow-up shots, increase fatigue, and make practice less productive for some shooters.

Conversely, reduced-recoil and lighter target loads can make training more comfortable, but they may not cycle every semi-automatic shotgun. Pump-action and break-action shotguns avoid that cycling issue, though the shooter still needs to confirm point of impact and pattern performance with the chosen ammunition.

A practical inventory often includes a reliable target load for range work and a separate, tested load for the shotgun’s intended field or defensive role. Keep those boxes clearly labeled and stored apart. Consistency reduces mistakes when you are packing for a hunt, heading to the range, or checking equipment at home.

Pattern Your Shotgun Before Depending on It

Patterning is the step many owners skip, and it is where assumptions get corrected. Two shells with similar labels can behave differently through the same barrel. Chokes also affect results, but choke selection must be compatible with the load material and the manufacturer’s guidance.

Use an approved range, follow all posted rules, and test from distances appropriate to your intended lawful use. Look for repeatable results rather than a single lucky target. If a load does not perform consistently in your shotgun, switch loads and test again instead of forcing a solution with unverified gear changes.

Patterning also gives you a realistic feel for recoil, muzzle report, ejection, and function. For semi-automatic shotguns, test enough shells to establish confidence that the action cycles properly. A load that fails during routine practice does not belong in a role where dependable performance matters.

Store Ammunition for Long-Term Reliability

Shotshells are durable, but storage conditions matter. Keep ammunition cool, dry, and protected from direct moisture. Factory boxes or sealed ammunition cans work well when they are labeled clearly and stored away from unauthorized users.

Avoid leaving shells loose in a vehicle, exposed to repeated heat cycles, or mixed with different gauges and lengths. Before loading, inspect each shell for damaged hulls, corrosion around the metal base, swelling, or other visible defects. When a shell looks questionable, set it aside and do not use it.

Buy enough ammunition to train with what you own, not just to fill a shelf. A dependable shotgun setup is built on confirmed compatibility, safe handling, and regular practice with the loads you actually plan to use.
